Terms of Use & Privacy
Last updated 2026-10-18. Please read these carefully — by using SalaamStreet you agree to them.
1. Agreeing to these terms
These terms are an agreement between you and SalaamStreet (“SalaamStreet”, “we”, “us”) about your use of the SalaamStreet website and app at salaamstreet.com, including SalaamStreet AI (together, the “Service”). If you don't agree, please don't use the Service. If you are under 18, please read these terms with a parent or guardian.
2. Who can use SalaamStreet
- Anyone can use the free features without an account.
- To create an account or use SalaamStreet AI you must be at least 13 years old, or have permission from a parent or guardian who agrees to these terms for you and supervises your use.
- Kids Mode is meant to be set up and supervised by a parent or guardian.
- We don't knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 without a parent's or guardian's permission. If you believe a child has given us information without permission, contact us and we will delete it.
3. Religious content is for learning, not rulings
- SalaamStreet shows Qur'an text, translations, tafsir, hadith, duas and other Islamic content from the sources named in the app. Translations and explanations are human works that try to convey meaning; they are not the Qur'an itself.
- Nothing in the Service is a fatwa or a ruling for your personal situation. Scholars and schools of thought differ on many questions. For rulings, please ask a qualified, trusted scholar or your local imam.
- We work hard to be accurate, but mistakes can happen. If you find one, please tell us so we can fix it.
4. Prayer times, Qibla and dates are estimates
- Prayer times are calculated from your location and the method you choose. Different methods and local practice give different times. Always confirm times with your local mosque, especially for Fajr, Maghrib, the start and end of fasting, and Jumu'ah.
- The Qibla direction depends on your device's location and compass, which can be wrong near metal, electronics or magnets. Check it against a trusted local reference.
- Hijri dates are calculated and may differ by a day or more from local moon sighting.
- Reminders and notifications depend on your device, browser and network and may arrive late or not at all. Don't rely on them alone.
- We are not responsible for a missed, early or late prayer, fast or other act of worship caused by relying on these estimates.
5. SalaamStreet AI
SalaamStreet AI is a free AI assistant for people with an account. AI is still experimental. Using it means you agree to the rules below as well as the rest of these terms. You'll be asked to confirm this in the app before your first question.
What it's for
SalaamStreet AI is only for questions about Islam and about using SalaamStreet. It is not a general-purpose chatbot.
Off-topic questions: warnings, then a 7-day pause
Asking SalaamStreet AI about anything that isn't Islamic or about the app is against these terms. Each off-topic question gets a warning. The third off-topic question within 30 days automatically pauses your access to SalaamStreet AI for 7 days. Trying to get around its rules (for example by telling it to ignore its instructions, role-play or “just test”) counts as off-topic. Repeated or serious misuse can lead to losing access to SalaamStreet AI, or to your account, permanently.
You must not use it to
- ask for, create or spread anything hateful, violent, sexual, harassing, dangerous or illegal — including anything framed as religious;
- attack, mock or spread hatred against any person, group, school of thought or religion;
- share other people's personal information, or your own sensitive details (address, phone number, passwords, financial or health records);
- cheat on schoolwork by handing in its answers as your own;
- overload, scrape, automate, reverse-engineer or attack the Service, or get around its limits.
AI can be wrong
Answers are generated by an AI model (Google's Gemini) and can be incorrect, incomplete or out of date — including about the Qur'an, hadith and Islamic rulings. It may get quotations or references wrong. It is not a scholar, mufti or imam. Check anything important against trusted sources and qualified scholars before relying on it. You are responsible for how you use its answers.
Not professional or emergency help
SalaamStreet AI does not give medical, mental-health, legal, financial or other professional advice, and it can't help in an emergency. If you or someone else is in danger, call your local emergency number (911 in the US) right away. In the US you can call or text 988 for the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. Please also reach out to a trusted adult, imam or counsellor.
Limits and changes
Each person has a daily allowance, and when it's busy you may wait in line. We can change the allowance, features or rules, pause SalaamStreet AI, or stop offering it at any time, for anyone, without notice.
Community Rules
Rules updated 2026-10-28. Everyone with an account agrees to them before signing in, and again when they change.
Keep SalaamStreet a good place for everyone:
- Keep your name and email respectful — no slurs, swearing or hateful words.
- Use SalaamStreet AI respectfully — no hateful or sexual questions, and nothing that mocks Islam, the Qur'an, the Prophet ﷺ or anyone's faith.
- Use SalaamStreet AI for what it's for — Islamic questions and help with the app — and don't try to trick it into breaking its rules.
- Don't pretend to be someone else (for example by joining the MSA under another student's name).
- Keep NVHS MSA posts appropriate.
- One account per person — no extra or fake accounts, for example to get more AI questions or to get around a ban.
- Don't hack or abuse the app or try to get into other people's accounts or data.
What happens if a rule is broken. An admin may send you a warning, which you'll see the next time you open SalaamStreet, or ban your account for a time or until the ban is lifted. You can still sign in to a banned account and you'll see the reason (one of the rules above, or another reason the admin writes) and, if the admin adds one, a message. While it's banned, the account's online features — SalaamStreet AI, the NVHS MSA and sync — are off; everything that works without an account keeps working. A ban for an offensive name or email is stricter: the app shows only the ban until it's lifted. The email address of a banned account may be blocked from making a new account.
Appeals. If you think a ban is a mistake, use Appeal on the ban screen (signed in to the account; the red bar at the top opens it). You can appeal up to 3 times per ban, one at a time; an admin reads every appeal and can lift the ban or reply.
6. Your account and what you post
- Keep your sign-in secure; you're responsible for what happens under your account.
- If you post anything (for example in an MSA space), you are responsible for it. It must follow these terms and be respectful. You keep ownership of it, and you let us store and show it to the people it's meant for so the feature works.
- We may remove content, or warn, ban or close accounts, that break these terms or the Community Rules or put others at risk (see Community Rules above).
- You can delete your account at any time from the Account page.
7. Privacy
- No ads, no tracking, and we never sell your data.
- As a guest, your bookmarks, progress, settings and logs stay on your device.
- An anonymous daily count. To know how many people use SalaamStreet, each device adds 1 to that day's total the first time it opens the app (as a guest or signed in). Only the day and the total are kept — no identifier, IP address or anything about your device — and your device isn't counted at all if your browser sends Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control.
- With an account, we store your email address (or phone number) and sign-in method, and the items you choose to sync. Your location is never synced.
- Closed-app reminders, if you turn them on, store your device's push address, your location rounded to about 1 km, your time zone and reminder settings so reminders can be sent.
- SalaamStreet AI: your questions, the conversation so far and — only if “Use my app data” is on — a short summary of your SalaamStreet data are sent to Google's Gemini API to be answered, under Google's terms for that service. Ayah, tafsir and hadith text from the app that goes with your question is sent too. SalaamStreet doesn't store your conversations (“Save” downloads a copy to your own device only, and “Read aloud” uses your device's own voice). We do store, for each request, counts, token use, estimated cost and errors, and whether you rated the answer helpful or not; your off-topic warnings and any pause; and when you accepted these terms. Refused requests are logged (who and why, never what you wrote).
- Community Rules: we record when you agreed to them, and any warning, ban (its reason and message) or appeal (what you wrote in it and the reply), so that admins can be fair and consistent. Admins see counts of what your account uses, never your synced notes or bookmarks. Every admin action is logged.
- We use trusted providers to run the Service, including Supabase (accounts and database), Google (Gemini AI and Google sign-in), Apple (sign-in), AlQuran Cloud and AlAdhan (Qur'an text and prayer times), and Google Fonts. They receive only what they need.
- You can delete your synced data and your account at any time from the Account page. Data you keep only on your device is removed when you clear the site's data.
8. Content and ownership
Qur'an text, translations, tafsir and hadith belong to their sources and are shown under their terms. The SalaamStreet name, logo, design and code belong to SalaamStreet. Please don't copy the Service or present it as your own.
9. No warranty
The Service is provided free, “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including accuracy, reliability, fitness for a particular purpose, availability or non-infringement. We don't promise the Service will always work, be error-free or keep your data forever — please keep your own copies of anything important.
10. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent the law allows, SalaamStreet and the people who build and run it will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for any loss of data, worship, opportunity or goodwill, arising from your use of (or inability to use) the Service — including relying on prayer times, Qibla directions, dates, reminders, religious content or AI answers. Our total liability for any claim relating to the Service is limited to the amount you paid us to use it in the 12 months before the claim, which for the free Service is zero. Some places don't allow some of these limits, so they apply only as far as your local law permits.
11. Your responsibility
If you break these terms or the law while using the Service, you agree to be responsible for the results and to cover reasonable costs that SalaamStreet faces because of it, as far as the law allows.
12. Changes and ending
We may update these terms. The date at the top shows the latest version; for important changes to the SalaamStreet AI rules, the app will ask you to accept them again. Continuing to use the Service after a change means you accept it. You can stop using the Service at any time, and we may suspend or end access for anyone who breaks these terms.
13. Contact
Questions, corrections or requests about these terms or your data: please contact us through SalaamStreet's issue tracker. If any part of these terms can't be enforced, the rest still applies.
